Tools of Urban Interpretation: Flanerie
Depending on your perspective Baltimore crapper be both a great place and a horrible place to be a flâneur. At first, Baltimores lack of street life appears to be a breastwork to practicing flanerie, and it is true, it is difficult to find a suit open location for one and only(a) to shuffle into. Being white in a bulk minority city also makes it hard to find places to blend-in readily. just now that is exactly what I set out to doâ€"blend into my surroundings, or more importantly, not be noticed season I observed those around me. I did just this on two separate occasions. The first was at the Towson townsfolk Center, a large upscale mall on the outskirts of the city proper. The act was at the Inner Harbor, an outdoor tourist destination in downtown Baltimore along the Chesapeake Bay. Through both of these excursions I was able to find a new appreciation for the city and its inhabitants.
unalike a pedestrian, the flâneur is actively engaged with capturing the city, while care uprighty treading the boundaries amongst being an outsider and an insider of society. It is comparatively easy to tread amongst outsider and insider in a new city.
Baltimore is still relatively foreign to me, so being a detached beholder is far easier here than in a city. Even still, I had to identify locations, where there would be many people and I could successfully blend into the surroundings and observe. The first two places that came to fountainhead were the Inner Harbor and the mall. I chose the Townson Town Center as my first excursion on a recent Saturday afternoon. The Towson Town center is a big mall, four floors, 195 stores, and 1,040,000 square feet of sell space to be exact. The exterior of the mall is menacing, driving by it you cant help but be consumed by it. It occupies what seems to be more than a city block, and there is actually little setback, the structure comes up almost all the bearing to the road (figure one).
