Stone Age. The first sculpture we know of from Greece is small figurines shaped out of clay. The statues are generally of women, and the women are generally very fat. They have big thighs and big breasts. Than they began to produce life-size rock and roll sculpture for the first while since the Stone Age. About the time of the Battle of Marathon, in 490 BC, Greek sculptors began to work in a new style, called the Severe style. This quickly replaced the old Archaic style.



In the Severe style, sculptors began to make statues more true to life, and with more looking at in their faces and their movements. Instead of all being standing right away up and looking sacred and peaceful, now statues began to do things: take aim a chariot, carry something, throw a spear, or sit a horse.
The Severe style didnt last very long, and by about 460 BC it was replaced by the Classical style. Greek sculptors began to prove with honoring the gods by showing the beauty and grace of the gay body, especially the bodies of young, athletic men (womens bodies were still not shown without their clothes).
