PROJECT Langston Hughes Short biography Langston Hughes was born in Joplin, Missouri, in 1902. He traveled all over the world-to Europe, Africa, Mexico, the Soviet Union but his face and home were in Harlem, where he was one of the most diverse writers of the artistic movement cognise as the Harlem Renaissance. Though know primarily as a poet, Hughes also wrote plays, essays, novels, short stories, and books for children. His piece is characterized by simplicity and realism and, as he at a time said, people up today and down tomorrow, working this workweek and fired the next, beaten and baffled, but determined not to be wholly beaten. By the time of his death from cancer on May 22, 1967, Langston Hughes had been in the public eye for more than 40 years. Unlike his famous ancestors, the grandson and nephew stayed out of the political arena -- at least officially. From the 1920s on, Langston Hughes produced a vast body of lit that presented race relations to both black and white the States as no writer had before, or really has since. His rig was prolific, unmatched by any of his contemporaries: 16 volumes of poetry, deuce novels, three short story collections, 20 plays, novels, essays, historical works, musical comedy shows.
