Except in his world, this is all highly illegal. Guy cant live around congratulating himself for being an individual. In his attend, hes a traitor. It begins with Clarisse asking if hes happy. Montag feels his body divide itself […], the two halves grinding one upon the other. This is our tumble to look for identity stuff, and once we do, its everywhere. Montag imagines that his new, rebellious fractional isnt him at all, but is really Clarisse. When he speaks, he imagines her talking through his mouth.
Later, when Faber ends up inside his head via the earpiece, we determine more confusion of identity. Montag even splits himself off from his hands, which in his mind are the dirty culprits breaking all the rules. His hands act, he doesnt. This is, of course, all about guilt. If Montag can ascribe his actions to Clarisse, or to Faber, or to his dirty hands, then he isnt responsible for his crimes. Its the old It wasnt me! defense.
The other big crises for Montag is simply not have a go at iting. Hes unhappy, but he doesnt know why. Hes confused about his relationship with Mildred. Does he love her?
