Comedy or tragedy? This is the question integrity must ask when reading The Tempest by William Shakespeare. To adjudicate whether The Tempest is a tragedy or a comedy, single must take a personal stand. Since the play has the isolated, deplorable side, it is in contrast with its cheerful, comic side. I believe that William Shakespeare wrote The Tempest as a comedy, due to the plot with dark irritability in the beginning and immature humor near the terminal, cocksure the t unmatchable of forgiveness that evolves through the play, and the f operate that no one dies.

Make the rope of his destiny our cable, for our own doth little vantage…(Shakespeare 4). The Tempest starts out with one of the most prominent examples of dark humor in the whole play. The quotation above explains to us why Gonzalo feels safe in the storm. Gonzalo feels safe because he images the bosns death from being hung from the gallows and not drowning. In the graduation couple of acts and slams The Tempest seems quite dark and foreboding, but as the play goes on we see how the characters change to good.
We have the characters (Alonso, Sebastian, Antonio, Gonzalo, Ferdinand, Stephano, and Trinculo) quarantined on this island being like Prosperos toys. As we see an example of Prospero toying with Alonso, Sebastian and Antonio in act 3 scene 3; Prospero has Ariel sets up an imaginary table of food for Alonso, Sebastian, and Antonio, as soon as they go to eat. Ariel shows up in the form of a harpy (bird with human head) Ariel flaps his wings on the table, and the banquet vanishes from the table. This scene has similar humor to that of a tom and Jerry cartoon.
