PURPOSE
Children from lower income families have significantly lower vocabularies compared to children in middle- and high- income homes. It was inform that 35% of children enter schools lacking the necessary vocabulary and condemnation structure. The purpose of the information was to examine the effects of a view as reading approach on the language skills of at-risk preschool children. It was also to see to it if story reading in the classroom can be infused with the positive attributes of one-to-one reading in the home.
POPULATION AND SAMPLE
cardinal hundred twenty-seven 4 year olds from low-income familes participated in this research. The ages of the children ranged from 3 years, 11 months to 4 years, 7 months. Ninety four share of the children were African American. Ninety five percent of the children were from low-income homes.
DESIGN
The design of the study was 2 (condition: treatment, ascendency) x 4 (teacher) x 2 (time of day), with teachers nested at heart condition (2 experimental, 2 control) and time of day nested within the teachers.
The teachers were delegate to either the discussion condition or the control condition. The intervention was conducted for four weeks. The first part consisted of training the teachers in synergistic book reading techniques and book reading extension activities as well as providing all the necessary books and materials for the activities. Teachers in two groups received the same books and were read the same number of times. The control teachers were not trained or supplied with the same knowledge and materials as the intervention teachers.
CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS
